This is an invited talk where I’ll be speaking to graduate students and other early career researchers about how to be a successful postdoc, what is expected of postdocs, and what resources exist to help postdocs succeed and transition to the next career stage.

What is an apparent magnitude? Why are they backwards? How do we actually measure star brightnesses through a telescope? There’s a lot of history buried beneath these questions, which I will walk you through! Beware, star brightnesses are cursed, but every astronomer has to deal with them! Good luck! ;)
