Back when I was writing my PhD thesis, I got curious about the weird offset bulge in the dwarf galaxy NGC 5474 but didn’t have time to dig into it. Now, thanks to some spectroscopic data from the PINGS survey, I’ve found evidence that the “bulge” might actually be a separate dwarf galaxy orbiting within NGC 5474! It’s a wild result that changes how we think about this little galaxy—and maybe even its history with the giant spiral M101.
